Jill! Don’t Open That Door…
Horror games are one of my top genres in the gaming and movie worlds. I could easily have made a top 20 list, but I chose five horror games perfect for Halloween. Whether you wish to play it with your friends and family or you go brave and play them alone; This list will cover all bases. I challenge everyone who reads this to grab some snacks, turn the lights off and choose one of these games to play over the Halloween season. Beware, though, who knows who may be creeping around in the shadows.
Behold my list below, and I would love to hear some feedback if you have played one of the games.
Number 5. Tormented Souls
Tormented Souls is a Survival Horror inspired by the original Resident Evil and Alone in the Dark series. With a fresh twist on the fixed perspective adventure, Tormented Souls modernises for a new generation – as Caroline Walker investigates the mysterious disappearance of twin girls in a terrifying mansion.
This game will be perfect if you love survival horror and puzzle games. I picked this up on the day of release on the PS5. I loved every second of this game. The creepy atmosphere and enemy designs match that of Silent Hill. Even the opening of the game will leave you shocked! Be warned, though, the puzzles start easy, but towards the end, they require you to tap into your inner Einstein to solve them. If you are looking for a typical horror experience from the late 90s and early 2000s, Tormented Souls is a must.
Platforms Available: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Microsoft Windows, Xbox Series X and Series S, PlayStation 5
Number 4: MADiSON
Madison focuses on the use of an instant camera to connect the world of the living with that of the dead. In this way, the player will use the camera throughout the story to solve puzzles, discover secrets that cannot be seen with the naked eye, drive away demonic entities, among others.
After one of our own, Kyle Doherty, recently reviewed this game. I brought it on PSN for about £12, ready for my Halloween night special. This is what he said about it. MADiSON is a white-knuckle rollercoaster of terror, offering an atmosphere so harrowing that it sits up there with the greats of the genre. An absolutely essential purchase for any horror fan out there, especially if they like the kind of horror that cuts just that much deeper.

Number 3: Until Dawn
Until Dawn is a 2015 interactive drama horror video game developed by Supermassive Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 4. Players assume control of eight young adults who have to survive on Blackwood Mountain when their lives are threatened
Grab some popcorn and strap yourself into what I consider the best movie-style game ever made. I never thought this type of game would impress me, but I was wrong. Everything about this, the characters, the atmosphere, the gore and the story is just on point here. A recommendation for this game is to get a few friends around for Halloween and take turns making the decisions within the story. See how many characters you can keep alive until dawn mwahhahahaha.
Platform available: PS4
Number 2: Alien Isolation
In this first person survival horror adventure set fifteen years after the events of Alien (1979), Ripley’s daughter becomes trapped on an alien-infested space station which holds answers to the mystery of her mother’s disappearance.
I have never been a fan of run-and-hide horror games. Games like Outlast and Five Nights at Freddy’s don’t do it for me. Endless Jump scares annoy me. So I put off playing Alien Isolation which was surprising because I absolutely love the Alien franchise. I was wrong, too; when I eventually got around to playing, it blew me away and scared me. The story here is fantastic, especially for anyone who loves the Aliens universe. The Alien design is just incredible. Where the game starts out to be a run-and-hide jump scare game, it slowly develops into a more survival horror with weapons as you and the character you are playing get more confident and aggressive. It’s a must-play for this Halloween. It is very cheap to pick up now across a lot of platforms.
Platforms available: PS3, PS4, Windows, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Linus, Android and Nintendo Switch.
Number 1: Resident Evil 1 (Remake)
Resident evil 1 remake is a Survival Horror game. The game’s plot follows Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine, members of an elite task force known as S.T.A.R.S., as they investigate the outskirts of Raccoon City following the disappearance of their team members. They soon become trapped in a mansion infested with zombies and other monsters.
I grew up playing survival horror games. I remember playing resident evil 1 in 1996 on my PS1, and I loved that game with a passion and watching horror movies from a very young age. I was 8 or 9 when I first watched Aliens and Evil dead. It takes a lot to scare me. There’s one game that will always be on the top of my horror games: Resident Evil 1 Remake. First released on the Gamecube in 2002, I was 12. I got it on release day, and my jaw dropped when I saw the graphics. When I was playing this game, I had to have someone in the room with me at times; it scared me that much. The zombie designs and their noises were terrifying to my 12-year-old self. They added a lot to this remake, which is how remakes should be done. Looking at you, Last Of Us. Please play this game. You will not regret it.
