Releasing in just a few months (slated for April 21st, 2023) excitement is starting to build amongst gamers for the sequel to 2011’s Dead Island. In light of this, Deep Silver and Dambuster Studio have treated us all to some glorious unreal engine 4 footage of the graphics, numerous environments, and some combat/gameplay mechanics.
The trailer commences during the game’s early stages in Belair and sees one of the lead characters, Dani, struggle to make it through the wave of Zombies as she desperately heads towards the evac center in Beverley Hills. The trailer then continues to show off the vast arsenal of weapons, cards, and different strategies to survive the zombie onslaught. On the subject of zombie’s we learn that the game has a mix of standard zombies (that one would assume offer little challenge) to the more powerful/elite production of Zombie (posing a more difficult encounter) called the Apex type of Zombie.
The cards bring enhanced skills to the table to assist Dani navigating through the threat the zombies offer to her survival, dependent on the environment and type of Zombie, this will impact the skills needed to successfully defeat these bloodloving, human killing, undead freaks.
The trailer also shows off the unique dismemberment technology known as the “flesh system” with blood and guts spraying magnificently onto surfaces, melting skin (yes seriously), and heads flying here, there, and everywhere. This IS NOT a game (or trailer) for the light-hearted.
On Dani’s travels, she also comes across a desperate citizen in need of aid via an audio/speaker system located up the street. (A methy looking Rockstar that could have had some trousers on at least ffs! :D) who tasks us with fixing the gates around the home.
In the final part of the trailer, Dani makes her way towards the Halperin hotel, where the developers show off an environment ravaged by wildfires and destroyed by an earthquake with collapsed buildings, uneven flooring, rubble everywhere, leaky pipes/drainage and vehicles half hanging off unbalanced surfaces. (in other words everything you’d expect from a hellbent earthquake ripping through your land). Here, we see the combination of equipment that leads to chained elemental effects/environmental assistance in getting past zombies. One such scene in the trailer sees Dani launch a car battery at multiple gas canisters which has some acid overspill and kaboom, just like that we have electrified zombies on the menu.
We then see the fury mode where Dani utilizes her corrupted DNA to mimic the powers of the undead with some kickass combat scenes. Lastly, the trailer ends teasing us with the Apex zombies (another term for the bosses I would guess) and a peak into the story as Dani recovers a functioning military radio with a doctor on the other end, communicating before we are rudely interrupted by a tough, uncompromising, uninvited zombie visitor whom literally gatecrashes the room via the glass panels above. (Talk about being rude right? They only had to ask for an invite!).
Furthermore, DeepSilver released more deets about the limited edition release and pre-order bonuses. Known as the HELL-A-Edition, this limited edition release of Dead Island 2 includes
- Steelbook
- Expansion Pass
- Venice Beach Travel Map
- 6 slayer tarot cards
- 2 pin badges
- Patch
- Weapon packs
- Character skins
Whilst gamers whom pre-order the standard version will be rewarded with the memories of banoi pack. This Includes the following:
- Banoi War Club
- Memories of Banoi baseball bat
- Weapon/skills
From a personal perspective, who else thought zombie slaying could be so much fun eh? The choice of approach and use of the environment to assist look very satisfying when pulled off as intended (For the more creative type of gamer, this will go down positively). Gameplay and movement mechanics look smooth, and the environment looks very nice, with some impressive draw distance around the 9:20min mark. To summarise the trailer does a great job of building the hype. Hopefully, the full game builds on this come release.
