Necro Story is a short but fun monster collection and turn based rpg. It takes place in a world where Humans are extinct and monsters now thrive, after 5 years have past some; common enemies known as Shroomz which are talking mushrooms find you The Necromancer laid out on a table. After they attempt to kill you until you are reborn and find yourself liaising with a ghost by the name of Vivi who tells you that you should trust her in that she can help revive all the humans, so then the game begins.
From the beginning the art style is most noticeable aspect of the game as everything is in a pastel style, its quite different to everything I have seen before and works quite well with the spooky theme the game has going on.
The game in itself is quite simple although few things are not explained but for the most part there are tutorials in how to play the game. The game features explorable areas and rooms and your first task is to escape the castle you are in, there are rooms and objects to break and treasure chests you can find. There are small puzzles also which can be done by following a certain path in the room you are in which will unlock a secret area or chest. Once you escape the castle you will be on an overworld map in which you will go to the next area.
Enemies appear as black shadows but once you initiate combat you will be in battle with the monstrous denizens of the world. The monsters are comical and usually border on the theme of cartoon spooky characters and have names which correspond to the type of enemy you are. For example Mushrooms known as Shroomz or a spear wielding floating thing called Spearz. You can of course rename them however you would like. Battles require you to take enemies out but being the Necromancer you are, you are able to catch these creature for your own use and have them be part of your party. Once they are they will attack by themselves but you are still free to attack however you like. Being a Necromancer you are able to pick your specialization from the beginning so you can focus on raw damage or damage over time skills. You have a skill tree also and this is as simple as upgrading your skills after levelling up.
During battle you can catch monster spirits once they die and catching all of the orbs in battle gives you extra exp. You can fire the said orbs into a mirror which will activate once you catch enough monsters which will add the corresponding monster to your arsenal. The orbs can be easy to miss and can fly off the screen almost instantly and there are other types of coloured orbs which will attack you or be harder to catch but will net you more exp if you can grab them, its certainly worth trying to but it’s not always easy when you’re focused on the battles and missing just one orb will void the bonus exp for that battle.
As well as the talent points you earn you will also get a couple of points you can use to increase certain stats of your Necromancer, such as HP or MP. Outside of this you wont be able to equip your Necromancer with any of the items except their Staff, you will find other items on your travels but they will only be equip-able by your minions. There really is not much else to say about the games mechanics outside of this, capture more monsters add them to your roster and fight the boss enemies and move on to the next area.
The games soundtrack does what it needs to and fits the game even if some of the music is repetitive. The game does have some light-hearted comedy elements to it most notably between the Necromancer and Vivi. Its not a ground breaking story but it is a small story which can be fun for a few hours and is certainly worth trying out.
